Peking University Twelfth Young Teachers Competition: Second Prize Awarded to Thijs Kouwenhoven

M.B.N. (Thijs) Kouwenhoven is a “Bairen Research Professor” at the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics. On behalf of the School of Physics of Peking University he participated in the Twelfth Young Teachers Competition for Science and Engineering. The event took place on 16 December 2012 at the campus of Peking University. Thijs Kouwenhoven, a citizen of the Netherlands, is the first foreigner to ever attend the competition, and was awarded the second prize.

Each spring semester, Thijs Kouwenhoven teaches the course “Modern Astronomy” to undergraduate students of all majors at Peking University. The lecture course is very well received by the students, and the number of attending students has gradually grown to almost two hundred. The course is entirely taught in the English language, contributing to Peking University’s continuing internationalization and its aim to become one of the top universities in the world.
